10 reviews for Oreck Commercial XL Upright Vacuum Cleaner

  1. JB

PROS: Always powerful, with a 35′ cord and just one easy-to-use power switch. The bag is simple to change, and it’s lightweight. It effectively cleans edges and gets under beds. It works on all floor types without switching settings and just keeps going. I’ve purchased one for my home, my workplace, for my two sons, and even for my summer house. It’s straightforward and affordable, outshining all the pricey name brands. CONS: Lacks accessories for cleaning vents, ceilings, etc. Overall, it’s the BEST vacuum for FLOORS. Highly recommend!

  2. LG

I’ve tested numerous vacuums in stores and have had a few disappointing ones at home, especially some that started with the letter D. The newer models often pull carpets right out of their strips, and I find many stick vacuums to be cumbersome and frustrating. Then I discovered this Oreck and decided to give it a shot. It’s lightweight, easy to maneuver, and performs excellently. I had my first Oreck about 25 years ago and loved it, but the newer model I got to replace it was a letdown, likely contributing to the closure of their stores. This one is reasonably priced and has been a great choice—until now.

We’re currently in the midst of moving, and suddenly this vacuum won’t pick up even a piece of lint or a feather from a down pillow. We’ve always enjoyed this Oreck, but now it seems to have stopped working. We changed the bag, and my husband checked the belt—everything looks fine, but it just won’t pick anything up. It’s Sunday night, and with a closing on Thursday, I’m at a loss. What should I do now? Please help!

  3. AMG Enthusiast

I’ve owned one of these before, and they are fantastic—so lightweight and easy to use, plus you don’t have to empty the bag every five minutes. This model is quite noisy, but I’m still satisfied with it.

  4. Elizasmith

I bought this vacuum about 2.5 years ago and use it daily in a home with two large dogs that shed a lot and bring in sand during winter. My house is 3,000 sq ft with various types of flooring: regular carpet, shag carpet, indoor/outdoor carpet, hardwood, concrete, tile, and linoleum. Its performance on hard floors is outstanding—unlike other uprights I’ve tried, this one doesn’t scatter dirt around. I use it in every room, and its lightweight design makes it easy to carry upstairs. The bagged style is really convenient; just make sure not to let the bag get too full and support the bottom when removing it.

Keep in mind that this vacuum doesn’t come with attachments, so if you need to clean high areas like curtains, you’ll need a separate tool. I often lift the whole machine to vacuum my couch. We chose this model for its ease of use, especially compared to my previous canister vacuum, which had too many features and was cumbersome to handle.

Here are a couple of tips, especially for cleaning large carpeted areas:

    1. Since it’s lightweight, there’s no heavy motor assisting you, so it might feel a bit difficult to push at first. The key is to align your pushing elbow with your hip and avoid overextending your arm. Move forward 1-2 steps, then step back. Don’t push it too far ahead of yourself.
    2. If you suddenly find it hard to push and it feels overly strenuous, it might need a belt change. We used it daily for two years before needing to change the belt for the first time. It’s easy to use and effective on all surfaces, making it far better than a bulky “do-it-all” machine that you dread using.
  5. Briffany

I absolutely love the weight of this vacuum! When I first lifted the box, I thought I had been scammed because it felt so light. Assembling the handle was a breeze, and I got right to cleaning. It performs wonderfully on apartment carpet, boasting impressive suction power that tackles cat hair effectively. However, it struggles a bit on plush carpets or those with raised patterns, as it doesn’t roll smoothly. On bare floors, though, it excels.

Now, about the noise level—oh my goodness, it is incredibly loud! I didn’t anticipate such a high volume from such a small vacuum.

I’ve only had it for two days, but so far, I’m satisfied. It does its job, which is what matters most. I plan to buy bags and use this vacuum alongside my bagless one for the plush carpet.

  6. Matthew Buckley-Golder

This product is quite pricey for something that barely lasts a year. After just 11 months, it struggles to pick up small paper bits and dirt. It just rattles around without actually collecting anything. I’ve disassembled it to check for blockages, but there’s nothing. The motor seems to malfunction now. Definitely a poor investment, and I won’t be purchasing Oreck products again.

  7. J.R.

Very disappointed ☹️. I selected this vacuum for its commercial use claims, thinking it would be perfect for a family with kids. Unfortunately, the plug doesn’t fit UK sockets, and there’s no adapter available!!!!!!!!???? A friend suggested Sebo, which sounds fantastic—definitely go with that to save your time and money.

  8. TP

This vacuum is fantastic for those who want a hassle-free cleaning experience. I have a cat that sheds a lot, and it effortlessly captures all her fur. It’s lightweight and user-friendly, which is a plus. My only downside is that it’s quite loud. Other than that, I have no issues with it. I’ve been using it for over a year, and it continues to perform well. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t come with any extra attachments, and you can’t detach the hose for cleaning tight, difficult areas.

  9. karen honhold

I was looking for a vacuum that would solve my frustration with hauling a bulky canister vacuum around my small three-story house. Most of my floors are low to mid-pile carpet, and I typically mop or sweep the non-carpeted areas instead of vacuuming.

Many upright vacuums in stores appear heavily marketed, often sacrificing functionality for aesthetics, which adds unnecessary bulk. I needed a vacuum that could easily fit in my closet when not in use and lay flat to reach under beds and other low furniture.

If you’re prioritizing function over form, this vacuum may be just what you need. It has a simple on/off switch, operates at a single height, and the cord wraps manually around retainers at the back. It’s lightweight enough to carry upstairs with one hand, offers strong suction, and while it is quite noisy, it meets my requirements perfectly. It lacks a light and attachments, but those features weren’t important to me.

For cleaning tasks beyond floors, consider Oreck’s canister vacuum (like the BB1200DB). It serves as a great alternative, bridging the gap between large canister options and inexpensive handhelds, excelling in similar ways.

  10. AMG Enthusiast

This vacuum is a total waste of money. I purchased a $59 Bissell from Walmart, and it’s clearly a superior choice. The Oreck XL2100RHS doesn’t have parts available, making maintenance a nightmare!

It’s strangely light, and if you remove the five hex screws, you’ll see why—there’s hardly anything inside. While it does have suction, the lack of a brush roller adjustment means it just beats the life out of your carpets. The roller brushes are poorly made, with subpar bearings and large gaps that collect dirt, heat up, and eventually melt. That’s why you’re advised to frequently check and replace the belts and brushes. Finding replacement brushes can be a challenge, and they cost around $20, while belts are $7 and more readily available. The brushes are the real issue, as they tend to melt at the bearings. Additionally, I find the use of flimsy wires (like coat hangers) in its construction quite odd.

You’ll notice there’s enough space inside to hide a brick, which, if glued in, could make this vacuum a beast! If you smell a strange burning odor, you’ve likely waited too long—over 90 days—to replace your brush.

When putting it back together, be sure not to install the roller brush upside down, or you’ll face major issues that require a complete disassembly. Oreck doesn’t stock any replacement parts, so you’re stuck relying on what’s left from third-party sellers. I could buy four Bissell vacuums for what I wasted on this one.

    My advice:
DO NOT BUY THE XL2100RHS. Look for a more common model instead.
AVOID ORECK unless you need something extremely lightweight.
If you have another vacuum at home, lower the brushes to the lowest setting for a similar effect to the Oreck (but be warned: this might cause your vacuum to melt parts—don’t blame me!).

Just get the $60 Bissell from Walmart and save yourself the hassle. Even if you go through three of those, you’ll still come out ahead!
